You are getting married and are ready to plan your honeymoon. How exciting! Now it’s time to decide on the perfect destination for celebrating the start of a new life with the one you love. If you have Italy on your mind then you have to visit Rome! Rome is a wonderful honeymoon destination and an important part of your Italy itinerary. Here is why you should honeymoon in Rome, the eternal city!
History, Architecture, and Art
Honeymooning in Rome is an amazing opportunity to explore some of the worlds most recognized historical sites. Rome’s rich history dates back thousands of years. With Rome’s key features such as the Colosseum, the Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, beautiful churches, and ornate fountains, there is so much history and architecture to take in.
Rome’s architecture is absolutely beautiful and you can see the artistic influences of Michelangelo, Raphael, and Bernini throughout the city in the buildings and structures. For your first stop to truly bask in the glory of Rome’s art, look no further than the Vatican Museum and St. Peter’s Basilica. These extraordinary structures not only house art, they ARE art.
Visit the Vatican to bear witness to Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel and his statue of the Pieta. Be prepared to be completely awe-struck by the beauty and detail. It is really hard to put into words how extraordinary it is to look at Michelangelo’s famous frescos. To take in the exquisite beauty of the Sistine Chapel and all it’s vastness, and imagine Michelangelo there painting it, is an incredible feeling.
To stand in St. Peter’s Basilica where millions have prayed, surrounded by the most magnificent artistic beauty you can imagine, and feeling the weight of all the emotion that has encompassed the walls and filled the air at this iconic sanctuary is something you will never forget.
When you step inside these places you will FEEL something powerful. Religion, faith, and belief aside, you will be moved. The feeling is powerful. To share this with the one you love, on your honeymoon, is a special experience that will bond you forever.
Rome’s High Energy and Great Nightlife
Rome is all about the hustle and bustle. From fantastic shopping, restaurants, and simply walking the streets to take in the sites, Rome is fast paced and continuosly moving. Rome is a great place to keep the wedding excitement going while on your honeymoon!
Rome is GORGEOUS at night! When the sun sets and the city starts to twinkle, you can feel the thrill in the air. Much like New York, this city doesn’t sleep!
Rome’s Iconic Sites are Centrally Located
When you are honeymooning in a place like Rome, with so many historical sites to visit, it’s incredibly helpful having those iconic sites in close proximity. Not spending large amounts of time traveling from one place to the next, gives you more precious time together enjoying newly married life.
From the Colosseum, a short walk will lead you to Palatine Hill, and the Roman Forum. You are easily able to visit the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon, and the Piazza Navona together, as they are all in the same area.
Oh, and when you make it to the Trevi Fountain, which is so romantic, don’t forget to throw a coin into the magnificent work of art as it assures your return to the Eternal City. Can you say anniversary!?!
Rome has Amazing Food
The food is delicious! From the pizza, to the pasta, to the pub faire, and everything in between, it’s all outstanding! And the seafood! When you think of what to eat in Rome, you may not immediately think of seafood, but actually, Rome is a culinary Mecca for absolutely superb seafood.
On our first night in Rome we stubbled upon the most amazing gem, and had the best meal at the restaurant Porto! This is a very popular spot for the locals. It will be packed at any given moment. When you eat the food you’ll know why. The carbonara and fish-n-chips were so good we ate there twice!
Whether it’s finer dining or eating on the cheap, you’re in for a treat! The bottom line is the food in Rome will not disappoint.
Your honeymoon is the time to take a breath after all of the stresses of planning and the whirlwind of activities. It is the time to enjoy and celebrate the new life you are beginning together.
