Visiting Greece has been a dream of mine for as long as I can remember. Oia, Santorini was my most coveted travel destination . I would dream of those magical sunsets sinking into the crystal blue Aegean Sea, the white-washed buildings, and the famous blue domes. Lucky for me, my groom felt the same. So when when it came to making honeymoon plans we knew Oia was a must on our Grecian itinerary.
I loved every moment of my honeymoon, which consisted of Greece and Italy. However, when it was all said and done, Oia was magical and the highlight of our Honeymoon. It was more than I ever dreamed it would be. The stunning beauty is nothing short of breathtaking. I can’t imagine I’ll visit a place that will top Oia, Santorini. Do yourself a favor, and figure out how to make it happen. TODAY! You’ll be so happy you did!
Here are some of the reasons staying in dreamy Oia for your Santorini honeymoon is the best choice you could possibly make when deciding where to lay your newly married, pretty little head at night!
Stay in a Traditional Cave House
I will admit the idea of staying in a cave house made me feel “little kid” excited. So when I found a traditional cave house in budget on Airbnb, I was ECSTATIC. We rented a traditional cave house in what is called “old Oia,” (named for being the original cave houses. Hotels and newer establishments are on the opposite end.) and it was one of the most fun and memorable stays ever.
The first morning waking up, as my husband opened the door to reveal the caldera view, I truly did have to pinch myself to make sure I wasn’t still dreaming. Another awesome perk to staying in Oia, is the location allowed us to watch the sunset (and sunrise from our patio.) As crowds were forming in the most popular spots, we were happily sipping wine and enjoying the incredible view from the privacy of our own patio. I could not recommend it more. Accommodations in Oia fill up fast and rates go up, so book as soon as you can!
Oia’s Romantic Sunsets
There is a reason people from around the world are known to flock to Santorini to take in the stunning sight. The famous sunsets are beyond amazing. The sky lights up in a blaze of glory. For a moment you are awe struck when the vivid color washes over you, but then you take in the entirety of the sight. The way the light reflects on the Aegean sea, the vast panoramic view, and how sunbeams set the caldera a glow. And then you instinctively look to the eyes of your newly wedded love, and share an unspoken moment of resolve that confirms you are both experiencing the same extraordinary sight. So romantic.
Oia’s Sunrises
Yes, I know this is similar to sunsets. BUT… the sunrises are just as inspiring! I will say that the time difference and a little luck were on our side when it came to waking up in time to see our first Oia sunrise. However, after the first morning’s happy surprise I made sure to be awake in time to watch, knowing I could always go back to sleep if I wanted to. I was on my honeymoon after all! Some of my favorite memories are having breakfast on the patio with my new husband while watching the sun come up.
And speaking of breakfast, Oia has many traditional bakeries. It’s not uncommon to receive fresh bread daily from where you are staying. Fresh warm bread was hung in a cloth bag on our door each morning. Did I mention, fresh and WARM!? Delicious. Our mini fridge was stocked with complimentary honey and jam. We went to a market a couple shops down for fruit, cheese and greek olives and such, and had incredibly romantic mornings. The air is crisp and fresh and I couldn’t help but feel invigorated and excited to explore.
Hike from Oia to Fira
In doing my research on things to do in Oia, it appeared this hike is a “can’t miss.” I will say, everyone is right. The hike is 6 miles and takes about 3 hours depending on how often you stop to take a break or photos. The views are like nothing I have seen before. The hike will take you cliffside, mountainside, and through towns. There is a gorgeous church about half way through, thats great for photos and a quick break. We were happy to reach Imerovigli, where we stopped for a small bite at this great little find called Avocados. Once you reach Fira, stay and shop. We took the bus back to Oia for a couple euros, and it was so easy and convenient.
Visit the Shops in Oia
There are so many interesting novelty shops and cafes down the winding paths of Oia. Whether you want to shop for souveneirs or stop for gelato, the novelty and charm of Oia’s shops is top notch. Some of Oia’s shops are lined along beautifully manicured pathways and others are tucked away in coves and cubbies within a maze of winding (and sometimes climbing or descending) stairs. A true treasure of Oia is Atlantis Books, which National Geographic named as the World’s most interesting bookstore. And is it ever! If you are like me, and you become intoxicated at the smell and touch real life paper books, well you’re in for a treat. It was hard to leave. Visiting the shops in the paths of Oia was a true highlight.
Amoudi Bay
If you are staying in Old Oia, you will be just steps away from the top of the steps that lead down to Amoudi Bay. There are hundreds of steps down, so be aware. You can choose to either walk or hitch a ride on a donkey for just a few euros. If you love fresh seafood you are in for a memorable feast. My husband and I still talk about the food we ate at the restaurants in Amoudi Bay. Make sure to visit Ammoudi Fish Tavern and Sunset Ammoudi Taverna. They will give you helpful and honest suggestions about the days catches. Seriously amazing food.
If you are among the brave hearted, you can take advantage of cliff jumping in Amoudi Bay. Although we didn’t partake, we had so much fun meeting other couples and watching them bravely cliff jump while we swam in the cool Aegean Sea. Be prepared to navigate through some rocky areas to get to some of the swimming spots in this area. This area is not a soft sandy beach. It’s mostly rocky leading into the water, but is no less beautiful or amazing and so worth the effort.
I hope these Oia highlights help make your decision on which Santorini village to stay in easier! You will have such an incredible, adventurous, and romantic time. It really is the best! It will be an experience of a lifetime and everything you could ever dream it to be and more!
